斷背山莊

2006-02-01 06:13迴響:11點閱:11041

brokeback capital hill.jpg

美國國會就是國會山莊 (capitol hill)
顧名思義
也是 山
既然是 山
就可能斷背

美國時代雜誌又再一次在斷背山上頭作文章
(見2006年2月6日號, 18頁)
可見時代雜誌也戒不了斷背山
(TIME does not know how to quit the mountain)

漫畫標題是
斷背山莊

左牛仔是 LOBBYIST
右牛仔是CONGRESSMAN

左牛仔說
YOU DANCE WITH THEM THAT BRUNG* YOU, CONGRESSMAN!
右牛仔說
(目前最流行的話之一)
"GOD, I WISH I KNEW HOW TO QUIT YOU!"

*brung不是正式的英文字; 字典上說要用brought.
可是brung還是被很多人使用, 即視作brought

re: 斷背山莊

I am trying to clarify some misconceptualization or misinterpretation here. The following paragraph is dry but I want to get it out of my chest. For your information: "academy award" as a name is "gramatically correct." It is pretty much like "letter box," "flower shop". The first noun functions as an adjective to modify the following noun. The reason we don't use "academic: beause "academic" would mean differently in this case. It is a broad and indefinitive adjective, connotating "scholarly" -- the award is designated to someone acclaimed in acedemic research. It doesn't make sense at all, so you must use academy instead. It refers to "the academy," a specific institution that coordinates the acativity.

Second, again, of course you broke your back at the moment you report it. On daily basis, you won't report you "break" or are "breaking" your back. Since it is a fleeting moment while you are breaking your back. It is next to impossible to say "I am breaking my back." Given that, you must say: i broke my back and cannot be otherwise. This is not grammatically strange or incorrect.

Indeed, there are times people have grammatical flaws in daily coversations. However, the examples raised earlier are not applicable.

Oh....s**t! I broke my back, 很少聽到人說 I braek my

Broke and broken are colloqually interchangable, particularly in many rural areas. There is a tendency that broke is replacing broken. For instance, people say "I am broke" instead of "i am broken" to denote I am running out of money. In United States, people increasingly apply past tense to any other possible grammatical status. Fly-flew-flew (instead of flown)

If you read the book, you would find cowboys not talk in a grammatically correct way. The author, Annie Proulx, works bery hard in mining the ore of language out of a Wyoming rockscape traversed by two itinerant riders in an ancient truckworks in an attempt to represent how people pertaining to a specific social and emotional status - high school graduate living in rural site, love-deprived and lonesome - would talk. I am actually quite thrilled to see how well Heath Ledger and Jake Gyllenhaal perform

Well, another explanation is -- it is a just name.

re: 斷背山莊

英文不佳, 想請問為何是 brokeback, 而不是一般常用的 broken Back?
只是因為地名的關係嗎? 3Q!
