My take on the movie "Memoirs of a Geisha" when I watched it on 12/16/2005 in Washington DC.


Gong Li (Hatsumomo) did an admirable job in her acting , as usual .

So was Zhang Ziyi in her role as Suyuri.

The wonderful costumes designed by Colleen Atwood were elegant and fantastic.

The cinematography was picturesque and painting-alike.

The haunting musical score by John Williams, was well ,very "John Williams".

Having said it, the movie "Memoirs of a Geisha" was an under-achiever and a slight disappointment for me.

After all, it's a movie written by American,directed by American,produced by American about a Japanese geisha and acted by three (talented) Chinese women. With all good and honorable intentions, at the end, it pleased nobody.

For the Japanese, it's too Chinese and authentically speaking, too un-Japanese.

To some Chinese, it's insulting and humiliating for the Chinese actress Zhang Ziyi to have sex scenes on screen with the damn Japanese and the damn American.

For the Americans, the basic flaw of the film is the dialogue that feels so "foreign" and "un-inspiring" it might have been written in another language. The different accents of the cast added more distraction because they spoke in DIFFERENT shades of British English. The storyline and alleged "romance" were as "foreign" and mysterious as its dialogue.

In short, Arthur Golden's novel "Memoirs of a Geisha" deserved a better fate.

The most dramatic and potentially powerful moment of the movie was poorly done.
Suyuri ( Zhang Ziyi) was doing her best and the only thing she could do , under the circumstance, to help her lover by sacrificing her body......while revenge-minded Pumpkin led her lover Sakamoto ( Ken Watanabe ) to witness the sex acts between Suyuri and the American pig, Colonel Derricks( Ted Levine).

Suyuri ( Zhang Ziyi) was a courageous heroine who displayed the purest and the highest form of love towards her lover by sacrificing her own body for the betterment of her lover . However, the movie never captured any enticing power or essence from it. The only drama noticeable came from , strangely and surprisingly enough, the performance of Pumpkin (Youki Kudoh) who delivered the line " You took it away from me. Now you know how it feels."


That's when my wife whispered to me " How cruel! What a cruelty!"
