一個重要問題

 英文和中文是兩種不同的語言,很多時候不能直接「甲=A」、「乙=B」地互換,而是必須依意涵翻譯成不同的用語。

一個經常被誤用的字,是「問題」。

 「問題」的英文怎麼講?好啦,大家手放下,真好,都知道是「problem」。

對嗎?不一定。

 「問題」在中文裡是一個應用非常廣泛的詞,這個也「問題」,那個也「問題」;好的也可以用,壞的也可以用。但是在英文裡,好事、壞事可是有區別的。

 「problem」通常有負面的意思,指的是壞事、麻煩事,例如:「The dramatic increase of the crime rate is a serious problem.」(犯罪率遽增是個嚴重的問題)

 如果「問題」指的是比較中性或正面的事,可以和「課題」、「議題」互通時,在英文裡就要用「issue」,而不是「problem」,例如:「Economic development is a major issue.」(經濟發展是重要問題)

 所以,真的有問題才用「problem」,一般事項用「issue」就可以了,不要讓老外虛驚一場。

而且,不一定每遇「重要」必用「important」,英文也常用「major」來表達「重要」、「重大」的意思。例如:「a major crisis.」(一項重大危機)

自稱Dr.但是功力卻一點也不實在。一路從文法到標點符號看得我心驚膽跳。唉!希望這人千萬別是什麼英文名師,不然誤人子弟事小,丟人現眼事大。
嘖嘖!也不知這人的PhD學位是去哪買來的,教我知道了,一定報官叫人去把那學校給拆了。
