Taiwan Film Evening

Dr Ming-Yeh Rawnsley, a Research Fellow from the Institute of Communications Studies, University of Leeds, presented a ‘Taiwan Film Evening’ on 25 March to LJMU language students and staff.

The audience was fascinated by the five short films and Dr Rawnsley’s talk following the screenings, which provided excellent snapshots of contemporary life in the Taiwanese society.

Dr Rawnsley is a specialist in Taiwanese mass media and has published several books in media and cultural studies about Taiwan. She worked for TV production companies in Taipei and London for several years as a scriptwriter, a journalist, and a producer.

This event is part of Dr Rawnsley’s national tour to bring the best short films from Taiwan’s rapidly expanding film industry to the UK. The tour also hopes to to create new public and academic audiences for these exciting cultural products and encourage cross-cultural knowledge exchange. The Liverpool Business School are privileged to see the films which are not available outside Taiwan.

回應: Press Release: Taiwan Film Evening

Dear Mike (the organizer of the Taiwan Short Film Evening at the University of Bristol, 19 March 2009):

I am writing to thank you for organising the event on 19 March 2009. Many people I talked to that evening and I all enjoyed the films, Dr Rawnsley's lecture
and the your hosting.

Congratulations on hosting a successful event and I look forward to more
similar events organised by the Centre. It would be great if Dr Rawnsley
could bring more interesting short films to Bristol in the future.

Best regards,

回應: Press Release: Taiwan Film Evening

I really enjoyed the films and as I said then, they made me miss Taiwan, especially Passing Eyes. I read it differently from the person there that felt it was depressing. If you looked around at the other people during those scenes you really got a feel for how full of life it is there. Perhaps some of it comes from my own experiences, too.

The Secret in the Wind was really great as well. It dealt with a difficult topic that is not easily discussed. I thought it was extremely well done.

I really liked Drunken Concubine. Out of all the films, I could understand the most Chinese in that one. Taiwanese culture is still very family orientated, so this was an interesting topic. Some of my friends in Taiwan have been in similar situations and it is really hard on them.

Melancholy Forest was really interesting and I'm not too sure about Bardo, but I think it would help to see them again.

When we lived in Kaohsiung we often watched Asian films, but it was often difficult to get ones with subtitles, especially Taiwanese ones.

Over the summer we are trying to give our daughter as much exposure to Chinese as we can as next year we will be in Beijing for a year. Perhaps you have some suggestions? It is difficult as we only at an intermediate stage with our language.

Thanks again for coming to JMU to show your films and perhaps at a different time of year there would be a better turn out.
