謝謝王建民,讓我們認識了大聯盟的許多動人故事,有些故事讓人欷噓,例如曾入選明星賽的歐佛曼(Jose Offerman),上周在獨立聯盟因為觸身球,拎著球棒毆打對方投手及捕手,被依傷害罪送辦,這名還懷抱希望「有天重返大聯盟」的三十八歲球員,顯然離他的夢想越來越遠;

I disagree with some of your points. 1st of all, Wang is already very popular among yankee fans. While not a super star, but he certainly is very likeable. He is still very new to league, so just like Cano or Melky, he certainly can't compete with the established veteran stars yet. And well like the famous MLB line in the late 90s; "Chicks dig long balls".

Most casual fans like to see strike outs and homeruns. Wnag certainly gets hurt here, his OBA is high and strike out is low, which doesn't fit the prototypical ace profile. His control is off recently and hitters are now laying off his heavy sinkers. There is so much scouting in MLB, eventually teams catch up with the fact, if they lay off the sinkers; often it will be too low for a strike. This then forces Wang to pitch up with less movement. He needs to get more conssitent with his mechanics and develope and use his secondary pitches more.

His needs a get-me-over curve or slider to throw for strikes in addition to the sharper breaking slider. And he too often leaves his change up up in the middle of the zone. As for contracts, he won't be a full FA for another 3+ years. So hard to imagine him cracking 6-7 million in arbitration. And again the high OBA and low strike will hurt his case in arbitration. But when he hits the FA market, it's not unreasonable to expect a 50 milion for 4 years deal considering today;s inflated market peice especially for a reliable front-of-the-rotation starter.

In the case of Clemens, he got this huge contract in part of his archievements, of his abilities, his star power; but mostlu because Yankees were desperate for starting pitching. Don't forget Clemens could choose to retire, or sign with the Red Sox. So he pretty much had all the upper hand in the negotiation; hence the biggest single season contract (he actually gets the prorated contract for the months he actually is on the roster).

For Sammy Sosa, it's a story with many twists and turns. You can't say he is not given more money simply because he is not American. He was hugely popular playing for the Cubs in the late 90s, early 2000s. Especially in 1998, when he was chasing the single season homern records alongside McGuire. Everyone know his signature homerun hop and the tap-tap-kiss routine. But as we all know now, he is 1 of the players that is being under heavy suspicion for steroid use (again alongside with McGuire). And he did get caught using a croaked bat (illegal by MLB rules). And after he was traded to (or signed as a FA with) the Orioles, his production fell so dramatically (BA , RBI, and HR, never a high OBP guy). Also his demeanor and peronality took a dramatic turn for the worse.

Always a prime mondoona (which successful athelets are more often than that; you need a big ego to sustain the drive to be the best), at the end of his tenure with Baltimore, he was a sour aging star past his prime. He actualy left the last game of the season early without informing hismanager and teammates. So he got this minimum contract this year, because no one else but the Rangers would take a chance on him, which,

I must say, turns out to be a great bargin. I guess what I want to say is pro sports is one of the most cruel yet fair enterprises. If you perform, the fans usually don't care where you are from (i.e. Matsui and Ichiro) and what else you have done in your life(I.e. Kobe and Ray Lewis; well, sucks to be you, Micheal Vick). If you win and you draw a crowd, you will be taken care of eventually.

To survive in Major League Baseball,Wang needs to outperform his American teammates by a not too small margin, statistically speaking.

If Wang's performance is on par with his teammates'(pitchers,of course),then his future in NYY is not very optimistic, let alone to get a decent new contract next year. It's not just Wang who might face this unfair treatment. Any international player would face the same situation.

Why is that? Because Wang is not a "native son". He can't draw a huge crowd such as Clemens,Mussina, and Pettitte. He can't speak fluent English in front of media. The US sport reporters/writers are hungry for news and more news about some teams and some unique players. Wang as a Taiwanese can not meet their needs. In addition,he can't help sell a lot of Yankees' jerseys like many other stars. He can't do a lot of things his native teammates can when off the ball park. He might be able to help the Yankees to win some games but he can't help his boss to make a lot of money.

Personally I like Wang as a person and as a pitcher. He is quiet and humble and always calm on the mount. He also is a fast learner. Unfortunately because of culture difference, what Americans fans want is different from what taiwanese fans want. His strength may become his weakness. His personality makes him lack of star power and wont be a flashy player as a result. If he is from a country with a huge market like China, then that would be totally different. The Yankees, like many other professional sports club in the US,are very very realistic. Whether or not they will treat a player with respect depends not only on his skill and capability but on his potential to be a money making machine.

Let me give you an example,as of today,Wang appears to be a pretty good pitcher but he failed to make an all star games two years in a row. Why?

Another example,Wang clearly is a better pitcher than Clemens, but how much did the Yankees pay the 7-time CY awards winner? Sammy Sosa,a slugger from the Dominic Republic with a 600 home run in record book, signed with Texas Rangers with a minimum salary(about $500,000)after conquering countless barriers one after another last off season to get a spot to continue to play in MLB.

Taiwanese fans need to wake up,to get real and to get more mature and more informed.

Brian Cashman, the general manager of NYY, knows exactly where Wang is from but why did he take the Yankees to visit China instead of Taiwan?

I hope to see the Yankees offer Wang a huge contract in the upcoming season but to make the dream come true,Wang needs to sharpen his fast sinkers, lower his ERA and do a lot of homework to figure out why there are still a lot of hitter who always can give him a lot of trouble.
